Opti-minds Teams!

On Saturday 23rd August at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, 14 students from years 5 to 7 participated in the Optiminds’ Challenge Day. We entered two Science and Engineering Teams and one Social Science Team. The children began working on team building activities in Term 2. At the end of May, ten of the year 5 & 6 students participated in an Opti-minds Workshop at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School with students from other primary and high schools from Mount Isa and Cloncurry. The workshop topics covered on the day included: Presentation Skills, Team Building and Communication Skills, Creative Thinking, Improvisation and Characterisation, Reading and Approaching Opti-mind Challenges and Creative Problem-solving Strategies. The program presenters were Fiona Meyer and Karen Scotney. The full day workshop for the students and “Twilight Workshop” for teachers were free, courtesy of BHP BILLITON, Cannington Mine.

In Term 3, the students had 6 weeks, to solve their Science and Engineering or Social Science problems, and prepare their team’s presentation of the problem’s solution.

The Social Science Team won a “Spirit of Opti-minds” Award and the Division 1 First Place Trophy. This team also received an invitation to participate in the 2014 Opti-minds State Final hosted by the University of Queensland in Brisbane in October. One of the Science and Engineering Teams won a “Spirit of Opti-minds” Award.  Each team member received an Opti-minds Participation Certificate for working on the challenges this term.
