Year 5 - Technology showcase

3/04/2014

This term the students of Grade 5 at Barkly Highway State School undertook a technology project. This project required students to design a park for the community of Mount Isa. To inform their designs, students had to survey others in order to reflect the real wants and needs of the people of Mount Isa. This data then helped to determine their final planning stages. The students then created a 3D model design of their planned park.

Students brought in materials that they wanted to use for the construction process. Items such as cardboard, felt, paddle pop sticks, pipe cleaners and string were used. To encourage and foster creativity and resourcefulness, the students were not permitted to use existing toys or figurines in their models. Time was allocated each week for students to make their model at school, which saw the students working enthusiastically and diligently.

To celebrate and display their talents and efforts for their task, Year 5 hosted a culminating morning. This event gave students the opportunity to showcase their park models.  A student from each class was voted as having the best park design. The task was well received, leaving many asking if they can do another project next term!
